Remember to be PRESENT this summer.

Jun 17, 2013 | Baby and Kids

Summer is OFFICIALLY here. School is out, the weather is great, and pools are primed and ready for endless fun swimming.
I've been swimming multiple times with my kids so far this summer, and each time I do I have to breathe. Deeply, and slowly, to ward off a not-so-small anxiety attack.
Every time I see a child jump into the pool (my own child or otherwise!), and witness their little bodies completely submerged under water for a moment, my heart skips a slight beat. I remember with absolute, painful poignancy what it felt like to see my own son drowning while I was distracted for only a few moments at the pool last summer.
Still, today, one year later, thinking about how I almost lost him will STILL bring tears to my eyes.
Please don't let this happen to you.
Please, I urge you – BEG you even…be present with your family this summer – especially your kids. Whether it's the pool, hiking, in a public place, or even at your own home, put down your phone and be PRESENT. These moments will be gone all too soon as your children age, and (heaven forbid), life can change in an instant for the worst. Take every moment you have and cherish it.
Be safe this summer and keep the big picture in mind. Enjoy your social media, but there is a time and a place. Set a few “me times” in your day to go nuts on your phone or computer, soaking up as much social media time as you want. But please, don't let that time be when you are with your family.
I love you all, let's be safe this summer.

XOXO,

I just went back and read your story from a year ago. wow. I'm so glad you're son is okay. It can be so easy to get sucked into the social media world and I loved that you were willing to share your story with others. I can only imagine that it was hard to do, but I know that I will think of your story from time to time and remember to be present.

I had forgotten about this post. This was the first post of yours that I read and it had such an impact on me. I started reading your blog after this. Thank you for posting this and helping us to all wake up and be present for not only ourselves but our precious families.

That's a good reminder. A dear friend nearly lost her son last week. He was blue when pulled from the pool and there was a fireman/paramedic at the pool with his daughter. He was able to save this sweet 3 year old boy. It was a miracle. Not a miracle that anyone should have to experience.
