Happy (almost) New Year!
I am still on hiatus for the Holiday break but got a question from a FCF Reader Friend that I simply couldn't ignore! I didn't catch her email address so I hope Renee Zerangue sees this somehow! Here's what she asked:
Hi Jordan,
I would love to hear your ideas on how I can get a quality family portait/photo for fun, cheap, or free. Here's the hard part....My son has a diagnosis of Asperger's and taking photos is simply not his thing. I imagine that we would need someone to take a bazillion photos before we captured the "perfect" one.
Thanks, Renee Zerangue
Well, Renee, I am no photography expert but have a few ideas for you and am happy to help as much as possible!
First of all, I have worked with children with Autism before. They are sure sweethearts, but it can be difficult to do something organized like a photo shoot.
I would suggest making the photo shoot catered to him by doing a 'lifestyle photo shoot'. These are quite popular now, and are a great way to capture life's moments in an authentic, stress-free way. It's basically where you do an activity you enjoy, and the photographer does basically an entire shoot of candid shots, capturing you enjoying the activity as a family. It could be playing at the beach, going on a picnic, playing back yard football, jumping on the bed, eating a favorite meal together, folding laundry, anything!
Photography sources HERE
What does your son enjoy? Maybe he likes to ride his bike, play video games, read, or likes trains, for example. If he likes trains, find real train cars and do the shoot climbing on, watching, and exploring the trains. Reading? Pull up a blanket in a park with all your favorite books and read away! You will be surprised at the beautiful photos you can capture while doing something relaxing and candid.
You may be surprised at how cooperative your son will be when he's in 'his element'.
To find a Fun, cheap, or free photographer, I would ask around. If you are on Facebook that is a GREAT resource! In your status say something like, 'I'm looking for an affordable lifestyle photographer to do a shoot for my family who is patient, creative, and experienced. Know of anyone?' if you have friends on Facebook, I guarantee you will get a response! Don't be afraid to post it more than once.
Not on Facebook? Simply ask around. What city are you in? Maybe a FCF reader has a referral for you!
So while you may not get the traditional studio-style family shot, you will most likely get loads of great pics that are more relaxed and natural. It not only will be a fun day with your family, but you will get more bang for your buck!
I hope that helps. Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Great deals to check out!
Lauralee, a FCF friend and contributer, emailed me some great deals that she has found lately:
- Subway: For customer appreciation all month long has their 6in Cold Cut and meatball subs for $2.

- My son also wanted Wheat Thins and I was so excited to see that they are buy one get one free right now so I got 4 boxes for the price of 2.
- Southwest airlines: Has a special right now. If you fly between January 24-Feb 2nd. We got tickets from Salt Lake to Texas for $60 each way! You have to buy today though.

Foodie Tuesday Food Tip: Organize your spices
Welcome back to Foodie Tuesday! Now that we're getting settled into our new house, I have been OCD about organizing everything RIGHT the first time so we can start out with a clean slate.
While I'm at it...have you checked out my ultimate 1-chore-a-day-to-a-clean-house list?
It's a life saver.
Anywhoo...
Today's food/savings tip is an easy one:
Organize Your Spices
I used to keep all of my spices in a cupboard. It wasn't big enough to hold all of them, though, so they were scattered between 2 or even three. The ones that got shoved to the back were basically lost to me, so in unpacking my box of spices I realized I was wasting money by buying duplicates of spices I already had...but just couldn't find!
Who really needs 3 containers of bay leaves? Oh, brother...
To fix this problem I tried a few solutions at my new house, but have settled on this one...
Use a drawer!
Yes, it monopolizes a precious drawer (and yes, my drawers are huge), but it FINALLY is a system that works!
A few important things to do (in my view) is:
- Choose a large drawer so they mostly all fit, ideally close to where you cook (near your oven and/or stovetop)
- Let's call it like it is...all my spices STILL don't fit in one drawer, but I got close. My big awkward spices (like my huge container of taco seasoning) I keep in a cupboard above the drawer, so they are still all close.
- Alphabetize them so you can easily find what you're looking for and know where to put it back where it belongs.
- Make sure the labels are facing OUT so you can scan them easily.
And that's it! It's a simple concept, but it works - cooking has become much more easy and FLAVORFUL (now that I actually know what spices I have lying around).
Note: If you don't have a drawer to spare, what I did in my old house was keep them in a cupboard with the most commonly used spices near the front. I kept an alphabetical list taped to the cupboard door so I knew what I had when browsing through recipes.
Easy, eh?
Happy Tuesday :)

Friend-Feature Friday: Reader friend shares how she got an item for 1/2 price, just by asking!
Happy Friday!
I got an email recently from a FCF friend, Jenny, who had an awesome experience with being assertive. Remember how being assertive is the "A" in my F.A.C.T's of saving??
Being assertive is taking courage, being bold, and ASKING for things. In this case, she asked for a discount and got it! Here's what she said:
I bought this baby food making appliance about 3 weeks ago at full price, $59. Then I was at Walmart the other day and noticed that they had dropped the price practically in half. I happened to have the receipt with me so I took the box to customer service. They said they usually only refund if there is a price change during the 2 weeks after you purchase the item, but they still gave me back the difference. I'm glad I remember it never hurts to ask.
PS. It works great. Jenny
Wal Mart will refund the difference if a product goes on sale 2 weeks after you buy it?? Whaaaaa?! That's awesome! Who knew?
You'd better believe I'm going to be taking advantage of that one...
Thanks for sharing, Jenny!
It's smart to always keep your receipts, even if you think you'll never need it. I keep mine in an envelope; this is also how I do my budgeting. See how HERE.

Keep your house clean with 1 chore per day
I don't like hate cleaning...but I love having a clean house. Let's be honest; there are a million and one things I'd RATHER do than clean! I'm ok at tidying up at the end of the day, but I'm horrible at deep cleaning and staying on top of the DIRTY, harder to clean stuff - especially bathrooms and floors.
I just moved from a 2 bedroom house (where everything was messy all the time because we lived daily in every square inch of the place!) to a 7 bedroom house (where there is just way more to clean!). Either way, it's hard to keep up (especially with hobbies, jobs, kids, spouses...).
Here's my simple solution that I've been doing for the past year:
Keep your house clean with 1 chore per day
It's so simple! By doing one "deep cleaning" chore per day (in addition to the daily dishes, taking garbage out, picking up, etc.), it helps you stay on top of the mess and makes it manageable. It only takes 15-20 (maybe 30) minutes so you can squeeze it in between other tasks.
Yes, 15-20 minutes...I promise. Please continue reading ALL THE WAY to the bottom of the post to see how it's possible!
For a printable version of this list click HERE
***NOTE: To share this printable list with someone, simple copy and paste the URL or link and send it to them; no need to "share" the doc with them.
I even made a calendar in my phone at first, and set an alarm to remind me in the morning of my task for the day. I also have a printed copy on my fridge and bathroom mirror to keep me on track for the day. Ok, here are the meat and potatoes of my magical list:
MONDAY
(Monday is cheating because it is 3 chores...but they aren't as big as the other ones so you can squeeze more in.)
- Laundry day. Always keep your machines running. Start first thing in the morning and consciously keep loads going throughout the day. Set an alarm in your phone if you have to. Fold laundry at night watching TV with the hubby. Make sure all clothes are put away before you go to bed.
- Tidy house. Go through every room in your house and put everything away.
- Tip: Never leave a room empty-handed! As you walk throughout the house ALWAYS pick at least one thing up as you come/go. Your house will be picked up before you know it.
- Vacuum main rooms (not bedrooms or stairs). As you walk through the house picking things up, drag a vacuum behind you. **NOTE: I vacuum a lot because I have a dog that sheds. You may not need to vacuum as much as I choose to do.
TUESDAY
- Bathrooms. Everything: toilet, tub/shower, replace towels and wash clothes, sink, floors, wipe out drawers/cabinets, mirror, re-stock toilet paper/fresh towel supply. Spray some good smelling stuff in there when you are done. The satisfaction is amazing.
- Fast and easy way to clean your showers: On "bathroom day" simply take your cleaner in with you while you shower, and give it a good scrub while you're already in there! The walls will already be wet and soapy, so it will go much faster (See tips on this HERE). If you are wary about "bathing" with cleaners, find a good homemade shower cleaner like THIS ONE. Trust me, this will make your bathroom day muuuuuuch easier.
WEDNESDAY
- Surfaces. All surfaces: anything that can be dusted, mopped, swept, wiped, vacuumed, etc.
- For me this included counter tops, windows, banisters, floors, microwave, kitchen sink, wiping down kitchen chairs, dusting and wiping all mantles/shelves/dressers/night stands/etc., wiping the top of the fridge, and vacuuming my floors, couches and stairs.
THURSDAY
- Organize/clean out something. This can be a closet, your car, your child's toy box, your makeup drawer, pick one thing and don't stop until it's clean/organized.
FRIDAY
- Tidy the house (Go through every room in your house...and never leave a room empty-handed!)
- Vacuum (all rooms including stairs.)
It took some tweaking and adjusting at first, but over time this became a fool-proof list for me that I use weekly. I looked forward to some days more than others, but everything was covered by my doing one deep-cleaning chore per day.
TWEAK the list to make it work for you!
Just keep the same concept of having certain daily tasks that will help you stay on top of the mess. I even have to adjust it from time to time. An example of tweaking as of late:
My house now is much larger than my previous home. What I've done lately is divide up the levels of my house. So on week 1 of the month, I do my top floor (but follow the same schedule - Monday, vacuum. Tuesday, bathrooms, etc.). On week 2, I do my main floor. On week 3 I do my basement, and week 4 I try to do whatever needs it the most. It has really worked for me because my house is big. In my smaller town home, I was able to do it all in one day.
Amy, a reader friend, brought up a good concern. She said:
This is informative and I keep meaning to make a weekly calendar for myself too. But these tasks will take more than an extra 15-20 minutes a day;)
My response to that:
Amy, yes, you are right - at first they will most likely take more time (depending on how big your house is). The beauty of it, though, is that if you stay on top of your list it gets easier. The first time you do all your surfaces you might really have to scrub your floors well. The next week they might not need as thorough of a scrubbing. Same with bathrooms and vacuuming...you get to the point where you "spot clean" many times and only do a super deep clean every few weeks. It's great!
NOTE:
I have had lots of comments from readers who work full-time, asking for tips on how to tweak the list so it would work with their schedule. You can break up the levels of your house like I do, which lessens the amount of cleaning you have to do every day. But I'm going to be very honest...even though I stay at home, I get ZERO cleaning done throughout the day. Hey, I have two kids under two (only 18 months apart!) so let's be frank...
It just doesn't happen for me.
I usually have to wait until my hubby is home, kids are bathed and in bed, we clean up dinner, then I tackle my chore for the day. I usually don't get my cleaning done until 8 or 9pm! So, really, just because I'm at home doesn't mean I get a lot of free time during the day with a baby and toddler. Maybe give cleaning at night a try like I do and it might work well for you like it does for me. (Plus, your spouse will be home to help you, wink wink.)
Obviously there are day-to-day tasks that you shouldn't ignore for an entire week, and that's perfectly fine.
For example,
I know many of you are thinking, "Laundry only one day a week? That would never work for me!". Yes, it's true, I do laundry throughout the week too - as needed. It's just important for me to have a set day that I know I need to replace all the towels, wash sheets, and even wash bathroom rugs, etc. I found myself simply keeping up with the day-to-day chores and not getting to any of the nitty-gritty stuff, and losing track. No more "Ugh...when was the last time I changed this hand-towel?..."!
There are other set-it-and-forget-it chores (like running and emptying the dishwasher), as well as as-needed chores (like taking garbages out, sweeping, cleaning spills and messes, etc.) that should be done as-needed. This list is mostly to help you stay on top of the deep cleaning along with the day-to-day tasks.
Trust me, even I am guilty at letting things slide here and there. But let me tell you, my life is definitely easier on the weeks that I follow this list than the weeks that I don't. For me, I will have to continue tweaking it since we just moved, but so far it has kept me sane, kept my house clean (for the most part), and has kept me from feeling too overwhelmed with a huge daunting "to-do" list.
And hey...by staying on top of your cleaning you will have much more time to enjoy fun, cheap, or free things! :)
Hope it helps! For a printable version of this list click HERE.
You're welcome :)

Foodie Tuesday Food Idea: Easy Holiday Treat Bags (great gift idea)
Welcome back to Foodie Tuesday!
Let me tell you, I know that I'M SURE glad to be back. We moved into our new house (shudder...I HATE moving...) and finally got our internet hooked up. Woo hoo!
Now, if I could only find my box of socks...
Needless to say, I haven't cooked much lately but I made a quick, easy, cute, and healthy treat that I thought I'd share. This would be a great idea for a Holiday treat for friends or neighbors. Enjoy!
Easy Holiday Treat Bags
- ziplock baggies,
- scrapbook paper,
- something to put inside.
Friends invited us over for dinner recently. Since we were moving I had NOTHING to bring, so as a thank you I did this:
I bought some clementines from Costco (I had them displayed in this apothecary jar I got for $5 from Tai Pan Trading).
I put as many as I could fit into a ziplock bag and grabbed some cute scrapbook paper.
I simply trimmed some paper to fit (cut it at least enough so that it will fold over the top of the ziplock and cover up the zipper part of the bag).
Staple it on there...
And voila!
This would be such an easy thing to do for Christmas treats for neighbors or friends. Fill the baggie with anything - candy, cookies, nuts, or little fruits like I did. Enjoy!

Christmas Traditions
I can't believe it is December already. Where has this year gone? Christmas is quickly approaching which normally means spending lots of money. What are your tricks for saving money this time of year with gifts, traditions, travel and fun?
I have an 18 month old and a 3 year old (who will be 4 the day after Christmas), both boys. There are so many fun things that are attached to the Christmas season. I love hearing new traditions that I can start with my family. This year we have Buddy, our Elf on the Shelf, that we started last year as a gift from my sister. We are also starting the 12 days of Christmas books, where you wrap 12 books and put them under the tree to unwrap each night until Christmas. Since books can get expensive we decided that we will buy a new book each year and the rest we will get from the library. We love driving around and looking at Christmas lights. Check in your area and find out what free events are going on, there are tons! Also...
Have you ever heard of the Portable North Pole? I discovered it last year, it is so much fun and best of all it is FREE! You heard me, FREE! You can create a personalized video from Santa for your loved one for them to watch again and again. The have added a lot from last year and my 3 year old couldn't get enough of watching Santa talking to him. I know you will love it too!
What are some of your Christmas and other holiday traditions?
