Saving Craving! Savings Tip: Make your own carpet freshener

Here's another great tip Lauralee found on this site!

Carpet Freshener

After having a party for an eight year old and sixteen of his friends,
(and one stinky little dog) we noticed the carpet was smelling not so fresh. Luckily the latest issue of Ready Made magazine came. One reader shared their recipe for carpet freshener. They used a box of baking soda, and a combination of several different kinds of essential oils. We decided to try this, but using our favorite scent pearberry. It is really fresh and nice for the summer.

First empty the box of baking soda into a bowl and add 25 drops of oil. Mix really well with a fork. Put into a clean empty shaker jar (like a Parmesan container) and liberally shake on your carpet.

Let stand for at least 30 min. We left ours on overnight. Then vacuum your odors away!

***Side note: you might want to call your vacuum manufacturer before trying this, to see if it will negatively affect your vacuum in any way. My mom has a Dyson and her vacuum repair guy said carpet powders are the worst thing you could do to your vacuum. That's just one opinion though, so give them a call and see what they say.

Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings Tip: Make your own baby wipes

Lauralee found this great tip from THIS site. Give it a try, it could save you a bundle!

Homemade Baby Wipes

A while ago we were asked to do a guest post by Kristen over at Peace, Love, & Crafts (thanks for having us, Kristen!!). Since she is expecting a little one, we decided to share a baby-related tutorial: Homemade Baby Wipes! In case you missed it, we thought we'd post it here today!

What you need:

  • a round plastic container with a tight-fitting lid (the one we chose is a little big, but it's what we had on hand)
  • thick, strong roll of white paper towels (we prefer Viva brand, as it is very thick and strong but also soft and cloth-like)
  • Sharp, serrated knife to cut paper towel roll in half
  • 2 cups water that has been boiled and cooled to room temperature
  • 2 Tbsp. baby shampoo or baby wash
  • 1 Tbsp. baby oil

First, cut your paper towel roll in half and remove the inner cardboard tube.

Then mix your liquid ingredients in container and place one of the paper towel halves inside, cut side down (save the other half for the next time you need to make wipes). Put the lid of the container one tightly and let it sit until all the liquid is absorbed. Next, turn the container upside down and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then turn it right side up, open your container, and "start" your roll by pulling a towel from the center of the roll.
Ta-da! You have just made baby wipes that will not only clean your baby's skin, but make it feel super-soft as well! Plus, these wipes are way cheaper than commercial brands and don't contain mystery ingredients. If you would prefer to make washable, reusable wipes, simply use this solution along with cloth wipes!

Saving Craving! Savings Tip of the Day: Remove sticky goo!

I have always been a fan of Goo-Gone (see left). It really works! However, if you would rather not spend the money or if you are in a bind and don't have any on hand, I found THIS article that came to the rescue!

It gives 30 things that you would most likely have around the house that can remove sticky goo adhesive from things! Take a look:

How To Remove Sticker Adhesive

  1. Nail Polish Remover
  2. Petroleum Jelly
  3. Toothpaste
  4. Hand Lotion
  5. Hair Spray
  6. Baby Oil (mineral oil)
  7. Vinegar (soak cloth, apply to goo then leave for awhile–even overnight)
  8. Rubbing Alcohol
  9. Windex
  10. Baking Soda & Water Paste (just rub gently into the goo, then wipe off with a warm wet cloth)
  11. Lighter Fluid
  12. Kerosene
  13. WD-40 (set for 5 minutes)
  14. Paint Thinner
  15. Rubber Cement Thinner
  16. Artgum Erasers / Pencil Erasers
  17. Peanut Butter
  18. Vegetable Oil / Olive Oil (set for about 2 hours)
  19. Margarine
  20. Cooking Spray
  21. Mayonnaise (leave set for a few hours or overnight)
  22. Goo Gone
  23. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser
  24. Furniture Polish
  25. Eucalyptus Oil
  26. Tea Tree Oil
  27. Perfume / Aftershave
  28. PVC Pipe Cleaner
  29. For surfaces that you’re afraid to damage, try heating the sticky goo with a hair dryer then wiping off (firmly) with a wet warm & soapy cloth.
  30. Duct Tape (stick on goo firmly, life tape up quickly, repeat as needed)

A few more tips they give:

More Tips

  • Tips To Remove Duct Tape Adhesive: try lighter fluid or WD-40.
  • Once adhesive goo has been removed, wash surface as you normally would.
  • If one method doesn’t work for your particular sticky spot, wash off the remainder of the remedy you tried and choose another.
  • Ann Parker shares a good tip below: If all else fails, and you are ‘stuck’ with the glue, you can stop its stickiness by dusting it with talcum powder.
  • If you’re trying to remove bumper stickers, here’s help: How To Remove Bumper Stickers.

So give it a try! If all else fails, Goo Gone really is magical. Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings Tip: $0.50 treat to bring to a holiday party!

Have a New Years or Christmas party to go to? Need to bring something but don't want to spend much? Here's an awesome tip!

I ate at Jimmy John's the other day and saw that you can buy their "baked yesterday" bread for just $0.50. I ordered some, thinking it would be a slice or two. WRONG!! It was the ENTIRE loaf! It was huge!
Even though it had been baked the day before, it was still fresh, soft, and delicious. We didn't eat the entire thing for a few days and it still tasted great.

So...for your party treat, go buy some Jimmy John's bread, cut it up, toast it, make bruchetta with pesto, mozarella, and tomato, or make any other type of bread appetizer. Trust me, it'll be a hit - not to mention it's fast, cheap, and easy!

Enjoy! Happy savings to you :)
