Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Coupon-clipping tips
I know there are many of you out there who are coupon-krazers. I, personally, am still learning the ropes. A popular coupon resource is the Krazy Coupon Lady. Her site is great, and even has a beginners section that really lays out how to coupon like a pro.
The Krazy Coupon Ladies were on the Today Show the other day. They had a few good additional tips on there! Click HERE to see the video.
Here's a helpful video I found on Youtube. I found it inspiring. Turns out I need to change my shopping habits a bit!
And here's another video:
As for organizing, many people choose to use binders. Here is an alternative method that seems to work well:
However, for those of you that like the popular binder method, here are some tips:
and here:
And here is a great PRICE LIST resource that I love! Click on "price list", print this out and keep it in your coupon binder or box. It helps you keep track of what good deals are on things.
As for you Costco-lovers like me, here is an interesting take on Costco vs. Couponing. They Krazy Coupon Lady doesn't shop Costco any more, but if you read the comments below her article, everyone has found great benefit in combining couponing with shopping bulk. Take a look HERE.
I hope you were as inspired as me. I have been an anti-coupon-er to date, but I think I might just give this whole coupon thingie a try. Wish me luck, and let me know if you have any other helpful tips!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Daily deal sites
Turns out there are TONS of Daily Deal sites out there. I have used them multiple times and feel they are a GREAT way to try new things, and save buco bucks!
The way they work is: each day they email out a "deal". Anything from car detailing, to facials, and museum tickets. Some sites have a limited number of items so you have to jump on them quick. Other sites have the deal available for a certain number of hours. Other sites have the deal available for a few days up to one week.
One neat perk is that most sites offer $10 for everyone you refer that ends up purchasing something!
My husband and I have really enjoyed the benefits of these daily deal sites! Here's a list I've compiled of sites I've used and heard from so far:
Screamin Daily Deal
KSL Deals
Groupon
Skweez
Baby Steals
Kostizi
The Daily Deal
Living Social Deals
Groop Dealz
Dash for Deal$
My EZ Deal
Baby Half Off
Mama Bargains
Kid Steals
Scrapbook Steals
Are there any other sites that you use and love? Feel free to comment or email me at funcheaporfree@gmail.com, I'd love to add them to my list!
Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Get the most out of shopping at outlets
Recently, The Today Show had some great tips for shopping at outlet malls. A few that stood out to me are:
*Shop off-peak times; during the week either right when the store opens, or just before closing.
*Look online for coupon books sold specifically for the outlet mall you will be shopping at, or for store-specific coupons. Also go to the information center of the mall for coupons.
*Map out the outlets and make a route of the stores you want to visit, prioritizing them. That way you hit the stores you want to hit the most, first! (While you still have money!)
*Make friends with the sales people. She said they will often call you when things go on clearance. I've never tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work!
Some great tips for cheap outlet-store shopping. Give it a try!

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Shopping sales
I'm currently on vacation in Oregon visiting my family (love the Northwest!!). Of course I had to do some major shopping in Portland with my mom. While shopping, I was reminded of a few great shopping tips that will save you mucho $dinero$ on clothing and shoes:
- ALWAYS start at the back of the store. That's where the sale and clearance racks are. ALWAYS. If there is a sale rack near the front of the store, it doesn't have the lowest prices - guaranteed. They do this so you'll have to walk through the entire store to get to the clearance racks, getting distracted by full-priced items on the way.
- Check your purchases, one by one. Items that have recently been marked down or are on clearance often times will ring up incorrectly. Don't get distracted at the register - watch each and every purchase get rung up. Be sure to question if the price doesn't come up as low as you expected!
- Take advantage of "the customer is always right". If an item is misplaced and was on the 40% off rack when it was supposed to be on the 20% rack, fight for it. Stand your ground that it wasn't your fault that it was misplaced and you feel it should be honored (and do it nicely!!) and they will often honor the 40% discount...if the store has good customer service, that is.
- Check the item for flaws. If you see a shirt on a clearance rack that you love, check it carefully. If you can find a snag, missing button, small mark, or other imperfection that doesn't bother you, you can get an additional 10-15% off.
- ASK, ASK, ASK. Remember the power of asking? It's imperative in sale shopping. Ask questions, "Do you have any other specials going on right now?" "Do you have this in any other sizes?" (there could be more stock that hasn't been put out yet) "Is there any way you could give me an additional discount on all these clothes since I'm buying so many?" The worst they can say is NO!
- Buy off-season. You can get skirts, shorts, swim suits, capris, and dresses for great deals right now since Summer is over. Stock up for next year, and buy them super cheap now!
- Try things on. LOTS of things. Often times things are on sale because they didn't sell well. Often times they didn't sell well because they look ugly on the hanger. Often times those ugly hanger items look awesome on your body. TRY THINGS ON! I can't stress this enough. Yes, you have to be in "the mood" to try things on. So get in the mood, and get in the dressing room! You'll find jewels in the clearance racks, you just have to brave the dressing room. Over. and over. and over. Worth it though, I promise.
- Don't give up. If you don't happen to find anything for you on the sale racks in the BACK of the store...and happen to find the perfect little black dress for way too much at the front of the store that's just perfect and you have to have it right this second because it's the best dress you've ever seen in the whole wide world...no worries. Simply ask the sales associate if there are any coupons that you can use toward the dress. At Macy's for example they always leave coupons behind the desk for people they especially like. No joke. Be nice and you might just get lucky!
Happy savings...and shopping...to you :)

Good deals at Red Robin!
All I have to say is...Yumm.
I love Red Robin. I typically get full on their bottomless steak fries and either split a salad or burger (they are huge) or take my burger home since I can hardly eat any of it! It tends to be a pretty good deal for going out to eat.
Did you know you get a free burger on your birthday? You also get a free dessert!
Right now they are having some deals, $6.99 for the meals you see above. Might as well try them out. Enjoy! Yumm.

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Re-use those old ties
Today's tip is a fun one!
Next time you think about giving away or throwing out an old tie, think again.
My friend Lauralee found this SUPER cute and EASY BREEZY baby tie tutorial. She made two for her adorable little boys, and passed the tip along to me. Now, I don't have a crafty bone in my body, but I certainly think I could handle this. It's a great way to use up your husband or father's old ties, or you could pick some gems up from Salvation Army or D.I. These would also be fun for weddings, family pictures, or for baby gifts.
Give it a try! Click HERE for the tutorial
Let me know how it goes!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Find your lost money
The other day my husband was searching the web and came across this site, http://www.missingmoney.com/. In a nutshell, it's a government site that keeps track of uncashed or forgotten funds that are waiting to be claimed.
Did you know that there are over $16 Billion dollars worth of unclaimed funds floating out in the world? Yes, that's BILLION. Here's what their site says:
"We're talking a serious number of memory lapses here. Uncashed paychecks, uncollected security deposits and undeliverable refunds worth a whopping $16 billion are sitting in state coffers awaiting the claims of their rightful owners. And that's where www.MissingMoney.com comes in. In conjunction with state offices, the Web site provides search results of unclaimed assets sorted by name and issuing party - free of charge."
Just for kicks my husband typed in his name. Guess what? He had TWO unclaimed assets! He thinks they were from old bank accounts from forever ago that had a little bit of money still left in them, that he had completely forgotten about.
He typed my name in for fun, and guess what...I had one too! Mine is from the State of Utah, probably some money in a retirement fund from an old job that I never cashed in. I had to submit a claim to the State (really easy, done right on the site) for them to tell me exactly what my unclaimed funds were.
Easy way to get back what's rightfully yours!

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Keep the love alive with a cheap date weekend
Date. Night. Is. Crucial. Period.
The weekend is here! Do you have date night plans?
Every happy, healthy couple has regular date night. I have found date nights can be expensive, though! Once you hire a babysitter, go to dinner, a movie, dessert...it adds up quick!
That doesn't have to be the case. There are lots of ways to have a fun-filled, delicious and exciting date night - or date weekend in my case - on a budget! To prove it, here's an example of how a recent weekend went...
Friday:
Picked my husband from work early to hit the 4:40 dollar movie Matinee of Charlie St. Cloud. We did the matinee so we could bring our squirly 7 month old and not have to pay for a babysitter. As predicted, there was only about 5-6 people in the theater. We sat in the back row, far away from anyone. We laid a big blanket on the floor and our baby had a blast crawling up and down the isle, eating snacks, and watching the movie. We smuggled in our own drinks and snacks, and had a great time. (Mixed feelings about the movie, by the way).
We got discounted ticket pricing since we saw a movie before 6pm.
After the movie we walked by Pier 49 Pizza in Sugarhouse, next to the dollar theater. We saw a chalkboard sign on the sidewalk. One side said "14 inch pepperoni pizza $5.99" the other side said "text PIER to 53535 (Skweez) for a free slice of pizza". So we went in, bought a $5.99 pepperoni, and had 2 other free slices while we waited. Their pizza is SO GOOD by the way. They also have all-you-can-eat pizza for $8.99, and have TONS of delicious specialty pizzas. We might hit that up next weekend.
We stopped by Taco Bell on the way home and got a free Limeade, thanks to a coupon from Redplum. We came home, put our baby to bed, and snuggled up to a Netflix movie (we got a 2 week trial for free) and home-made dessert :
(my favorite quick and easy go-to dessert.....1 chocolate-type cake mix, 1 can of no-name diet
cola, bought the entire case for $0.99 on sale. No oil, eggs, or water needed! Mix, bake as
directed {I usually add a handfull of chocolate chips to the mix} and you have a diet, quick
and easy, super moist cake. Top with your favorite homemade frosting and it's delish!).
Once home I looked online and signed up for Pier 49 Pizza's mailing list and got a coupon for a free pizza. We'll definitely hit that up next weekend.
Saturday:
Enjoyed walking around the Salt Lake Farmer's Market. We heard live music, bought local produce, and enjoyed being out in the nice weather. There are lots of fun/cheap/free events in every city. Take the time to find out what is going on in your own city!
For lunch we took advantage of Olive Garden's unlimited pasta bowls (I have a rule that I don't cook on the weekends...we don't normally eat out this much, I promise!). We tried many different variations of pasta and took home an entire sack of leftovers. There were enough leftovers to feed us for at least 3-4 meals each.
Just up the street from Olive Garden is Rocky Mountain Pizza. We signed up for their email list previously (we had to do it in their shop) and they sent us a coupon for an order of free garlic twists, no purchase necessary. Even though we were stuffed to the rafters, we swung by and got the garlic twists to eat with dinner. Hey, they were free after all and we were in the neighborhood!
As a little treat, we enjoyed $15 worth of frozen yogurt, a coupon that I purchased for just $6 from Groupon.
After our son's nap we went on a family hike. Enjoying free parks and hikes is a great way to bond as a family, get outdoors, and work off all the discounted food we consumed over the weekend!
After the hike we cleaned up the house a little. My husband grabbed his old Ti-83+ calculator (10+ years old) from the "trow away pile" that I had been accumulating all week, and posted it on KSL (like a local Craigslist). Within 30 minutes he had a buyer, and sold it for $50. And to think I almost threw it away. Remember to always sell your stuff if you can!!
For dinner we ate some of our leftovers (we had enough to feed an army), then went to a friend's house for game night. We used our nifty home-made baby monitor so we didn't have to pay a babysitter. It was a fun-filled weekend that really brought my husband and I closer together.
I hope your weekend is just as fun-filled, and inexpensive!
Happy savings...and date night...to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Sneaky chip repair
Tonight I was talking with my mom and she told me the BEST tip. It's so easy, and FREE!
She has these adorable red plates that are the focalpoint of her kitchen. The bummer with bright dishwear, though, is that when it chips (as all dishes do) it's really noticeable. Marker doesn't work well because it doesn't fill in the chip and isn't shiny like ceramic. Shoe polish doesn't work, and furniture markers don't work either. The solution?
Happy savings to you :)

Yup, nail polish. Give it a try, it works like a gem!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Saving tomato paste
Typically when I cook, I only need a small spoon full of tomato paste...and end up having lots left over! I've tried saving it in my fridge, but I forget about it, or don't use it in time and I end up having to throw it out.
A tip I learned is this:
If you have leftover tomato paste, chicken stock, etc. simply freeze it in ice cube trays, take them out once hardened, put in a ziplock, and you have small servings whenever needed! It's a great way to save.
Happy savings to you!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Skip the hand washing
My husband and I have a slight debate in our house. He tends to hand-wash dishes, saying it's faster to just get them clean and back in the cupboards. I, however, am pro automatic dishwasher and tend to throw everything in there. There are definite positive arguments for both methods.
For a long time it was thought that hand-washing dishes was better on the environment, and cheaper utility bill-wise, than washing in an automatic dish washer. Well, great news folks....
Skip the hand washing!
Today dish washers use about half the energy, one-sixth the water, and less soap than hand-washing dishes! Energy efficient washers only use about 4 gallons, while hand-washing uses between 35-40 gallons (depending on how much you are washing). This is a great money saving tip. It saves you time (and remember how saving time = saving money?), uses less power, and cuts down on your carbon footprint. But of course, be sure to run it only when it's completely full.
Happy savings to you!

Quick, Easy, and Affordable Projects!
Here are a few more inexpensive furniture transformations I've been working on lately.
I rarely do a project that requires sanding. I am not a fan!
Usually, it's paint and hardware and that's it! And then you have a whole new piece!
With a little paint, a little glazing...
And a new piece of fabric to replace the previous vinyl seat cover...
it turned out pretty good for what I needed!
Total Investment:$10.00
I found this cute dresser with a matching night stand for $15.00 at a garage sale.
With a quick coat of paint, glazing, and new hardware it's a whole new set!
$5 off Kirkland Diapers!
Costco is having a sale on all Kirkland diapers right now, $5 off any box! They also have $4 off Kirkland wipes, online only.
I, personally, LOVE Kirkland diapers. For my son they actually work better than Huggies and Luvs.
If you don't have the diaper coupon you can either click HERE to buy them online, or you can ask the membership desk for a coupon book. They always have extras.
Go stock up now!
Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Freecycle
My friend Sharon told me about an AWESOME Yahoo feature called Freecycle.
The way it works is, you create a (free) Yahoo email account, then join the Freecycle "group" in your area (they have them in most major cities). You then write a message to the group stating something you are looking for, or something you are looking to get rid of, and you find a match! It's a great way to get FREE stuff, or to get rid of old stuff!
Here is the official description from the website:
Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,848 groups with 7,568,041 members around the world. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on 'Browse Groups' above the search box. Have fun!
I love this idea for so many reasons. Give it a try, and happy savings to you!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Don't throw out that old produce!
Today I was cleaning out my fridge and saw some old grapefruits that were about past their prime. I didn't want to eat them and was about to throw them out, when I decided to experiment. The result?
A delicious grapefruit smoothie!
I simply peeled and cut up the grapefruit, threw it in the blender with some apple juice, strawberry yogurt, and frozen strawberries, added a little ice, and ta-da! Yumminess. I, of course, had to add a little whipped cream on top. :)
Today's tip? If you are considering throwing out some over-ripe or bruised fruit or veggies, try to make them into a smoothie! You can even throw a handfull of spinach or other veggies in a smoothie. It makes it ultra healthy, and gets rid of veggies that are about to go bad.
If you go to websites like THIS it gives lots of yummy smoothie recipe ideas!
And there you have it!
Happy savings to you...enjoy!

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Fun trick with old shower curtains
Have you got an old shower curtain lying around?
Turns out, there are lots of fun things you can do with it! Remember our mantra? This is a great way to make it last longer!
First, be sure to wash the shower curtain. Wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle.
Next, get creative! Here are some neat things to do with that old shower curtain - or even a new shower curtain that you find for super cheap:
Turns out, there are lots of fun things you can do with it! Remember our mantra? This is a great way to make it last longer!
First, be sure to wash the shower curtain. Wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle.
Next, get creative! Here are some neat things to do with that old shower curtain - or even a new shower curtain that you find for super cheap:
- Make baby bibs. Sew bias tape or ribbon on the top to go around the baby's neck (see image as an example), and fold up the bottom and sew it to create a food catching pocket. Pair these with used children's books in a cute basket, and you have a great, creative baby shower gift!
- Use it as a shield. Finger painting, crafts, a table cloth, as a drop-cloth to protect the floor under a high chair, put it down when doing a project, etc. You can even use it to protect a mattress!
- Use it as a water slide. Secure it to the ground with pegs, and off you go!
- Use it outside. Keep your patio furniture dry, cover your wood pile, cover a BBQ, cover plants on a frosty night, table cloth for your picnic table, kneel on it while weeding, use it as a tarp to gather plants while weeding or raking.
- Use it for a pattern. Rather than using paper patterns, cut the pattern out on the shower curtain. It will last much longer this way.
- Use it like a tarp. Put it on the ground at an outdoor concert or picnic to keep you dry, use it to gather plants when raking or weeding, or use it in the bottom of a tent.
- Make beach bags out of it. Throw all your wed stuff in, and away you go!
- Use it as a lining. Line the inside of diaper bags, coats, reusable grocery bags, etc.

And there you have it! Remember to try to be as creative as possible when you are considering throwing things out. There are often times many uses for your old items. Happy savings to you! :)

Decorating on a Dime
Decorating your home can definitely get expensive, so anytime I can add to the house with a limited amount of money I am one happy camper! Here are a few things I've done lately:
I found both this pottery barn shelf ($10) and 3 baskets ($2) and garage sales over the years and just had them stored in my basement. I didn't like the baskets, but was able to give them new life and make them work for me! 2 cans of spray paint and 10 minutes later the baskets look great and fit the color scheme of my craft room (black/green/white)!
Also, they had tan liners in them which I soaked in bleach for about 5 minutes and instantly they were a crisp clean white!!
Total invested: Shelf ($10) 3 Baskets ($2) 2 cans of spray paint ($6)
And under $10!
Total Invested: Table found at garage sale ($2) 2 cans of spray paint ($6)
*Glaze treatment: buy a can of clear glaze in the paint section of your local hardware store, have black added to it, or any color for that matter, and once a piece is painted- paint on the glaze just like you would paint. Let it sit for a few minutes then wipe off with a wet cloth! All of the grooves and curves will completely POP! It is such a simple technique and adds so much character!
Total Invested: Table found at garage sale ($15) Knobs ($4) 4 cans of spray paint ($12)
*Can of primer paint and glaze paint I've had on hand and used for multiple projects with. They last quite a bit and are about $15 per can.
I found this nightstand with a matching 6 drawer dresser at a garage sale for $15 total!
After a quick coat of spray paint ($6) new hardware($6) and some glaze it looks like a new piece!
