Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Cheaper Immunizations

*Disclaimer: I realize the subject of immunizing your child is quite the heated debate these days. This article states my strong opinions about certain things, and my intention is not to offend anyone. I'm simply relaying my story and I hope you realize we are all entitled to our own opinions!
My baby turned 6 months old about a month ago. Any mom knows what that means...SHOTS. Lots of shots.
(I, personally, feel that immunizing your baby is very important. Immunizations were created to prevent death and protect us all from harmful diseases. I know some people don't agree, but that's my stance!)

Remember my post about asking? Have you ever asked what immunizations cost?
A LOT!
Immunizations can be very expensive, especially when given in a doctor's office. I was able to save about $480 on his immunizations!!!

Here's the story:

With my new insurance my baby's preventative benefits for the year ran out in his first visit. This means that my insurance will cover nothing, unless he gets sick or injured. No wellness visits, shots, nada.

Prior to his 6 month appointment I called my doctor's office and asked the secretary if there were any discounts she could give me on his upcoming visit. She said she'd give me a discount if I paid in full at the time of visit. I thanked her, but I wanted more options. She transferred me back to the nurse to talk about cost.

I explained to the nurse that my husband is self-employed, we don't make a lot of money, and our insurance won't pay for wellness visits for the rest of the year.
I said, "I really want to use your office but I won't be able to afford it. Is there anything you can do to help me out?"
(This is a GREAT question to use, by the way!!)

She said I could work out a payment plan, offered the same discount the secretary offered, and said that's all she could do for me. (Hey, at least I tried, right?) She put me on hold while she added up the expected cost of the 6 immunizations that he would receive.
The grand total?
Over $500.00

I almost fainted.
"$500?"
She said, "Yea, and that's just for the medicine. That doesn't include anything else."

She described a program to assist people with no insurance. It brings the cost of the immunizations down to about $15 each. "But that wouldn't help you because you have insurance."
(Just for the record, how unfair is that? I'm doing what I'm supposed to and protecting my family with insurance, and the ones who are getting help are those that show up, get treated, and expect not to pay! So frustrating.)

She recommended I call a local health clinic to get better pricing on his shots.
So I did! I googled the Salt Lake health department, got the number and called. The lady said to come in, and depending on my circumstances, the immunizations could be as low as $10 each. Now that's more like it.

I went in (no appointments, walk-in only), and got helped immediately. The place was clean and well-staffed. I explained my situation to the receptionist "...I have insurance, but his preventative care ran out...too expensive in the doctor's office...was referred to you."

She took my insurance card and informed me, "we aren't contracted with this insurance company, so I'm sorry but we can't bill through them."
I said, "It's ok, it doesn't matter anyway because my preventative max has been met."

She took out a price list and added up the immunization prices. $38...$69...$102...they added up quick. While it was cheaper than my doctor's office, it still added up to roughly $400-something. I couldn't believe it. I asked a few questions:
  1. Is there anything you can do about that price? ("No, that is simply what they cost")
  2. Are there any other options? ("You could go to your pediatrician instead")
  3. Do you offer payment plans? ("Yes, you pay what you can today then the rest is required in 30 days")
I was distressed. $400 for immunizations was still way out of my price range. I explained my situation to her in detail, just like I had to my nurse earlier. "My husband is self-employed...don't bring home much money...yes, we have insurance but they won't cover shots any more..."

She stopped me and said,
"Ok wait, so your insurance doesn't pay for immunizations?"
"No, not for another year."
"Well that's another story then. What is your gross household income?"

She asked me a few more financial questions, took out her calculator, and said:
"Based on your circumstances we can give you these immunizations for $10 each. Since some of the shots are combo shots, your total today will be $40."
$40??? TOTAL??? I almost kissed her.

I've never been so relieved in my entire life. The nurse was amazing that treated my son, and we were in and out in no time. They even gave us a free book from their children's library.

So, here is the summary of what I learned; how to get cheaper immunizations:
  • Get creative. You don't always have to get shots from your pediatrician's office - they always charge the most.
  • Ask price. Never be embarrassed. Price shop doctors, clinics, locations, everything!
  • Take advantage of county/city/state health clinics! I had a great experience at mine. You can get great, affordable care there.
  • Ask, ask, ask. Ask lots of questions. Had I not asked so many questions to the secretary, nurse, and health clinic lady, I never would have saved so much.
  • Be honest about your situation. While I'm sure that our tight financial situation is temporary, it's still tight. If you are a student, self-employed, or recently laid off, there are lots of programs out there to help you keep your family safe and healthy, affordably. Be honest with yourself and ask for help, and be honest with the programs - don't exaggerate or take advantage. That's just mean.
The conclusion of my story is that now my baby is healthy and immunized, and we didn't have to go into debt for it. His next appointment is his 9 month appointment. No shots are needed, so I will be taking him into his doctor to get his wellness exam like normal. I do feel that it's important for him to be checked out by his doc once in a while, just to make sure he's growing like he should.

So that's it! Give health clinics a try!

Good luck to you in getting more affordable immunizations!
Happy savings - and health - to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Avoid expensive fridge fresheners

Here's a great tip I got from the Tightwad Gazette:
If any of you use charcoal in your grill, here's a great tip for using it instead of those expensive fridge fresheners out there!

Put 3 charcoal pieces (or so) in your fridge, and 3 in your freezer. They absorb odors really well! After a month or so simply return them to the charcoal bag to be used on your grill, and grab 3 new ones. Ta-da! Nice smelling fridge, for free :)

Happy savings to you!

From what I can see, the prices are pretty comparable to prices in the stores. You get free 2-day shipping on orders $25+, so it sounds pretty convenient to have it shipped to your front door!

Give it a try, let me know what you think!

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Price-matching

I thought today's tip would be appropriate, especially with the ground beef sale going on that I mentioned earlier.

Todays tip? PRICE MATCH! I am a big fan of price matching.

Basically what it means is, if Target (for example) has something advertised that's cheaper than Wal-Mart, if you bring the advertisement into Wal-Mart, they'll give you Target's price! This is SO GREAT because you don't have to run to 5 different stores to take advantage of everyone's sales!

My favorite store to price match is Wal-Mart. They are used to it so it has never been a hassle for me, and they typically have everything that is found at other stores. If they don't have the specific brand that is advertised in another store, I grab the second best and they usually don't even care!

There are many other stores out there that will price match. I know Lowes and Home Depot typically price match, as does Target. Most stores now, actually, have jumped on board. Simply ask the checker. Remember the power of asking? The worst they can say is no :)

A company that I love is www.dealstomeals.com.

Each week they scour all the stores' sales and deals. They put it all on an easy spreadsheet, organized from the best deals down to the average deals. You check the boxes of the items you want, print your shopping list, and that's it! Take it into Wal-Mart or another price-matching store and you can get all your items on sale. You then buy what's super-cheap, stock up, and you have it on had for when you need it!

Price matching saves so much time and money! It eliminates the need to run to every store each week, and gives you the best pricing on everything.

So give it a try! You won't be disappointed, I promise. Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: The power of ASKING - What is the cost?

*Note - This post used to be called "ask the price". I changed it because it is not always about the initial price, rather, the most important thing to ask is what the OVERALL cost will be.
questions.jpg
Today's savings tip is an important one:  Ask, Ask, Ask!
It's such an important tip, in fact, that I will be doing a serious of savings tips about asking.

My husband is the king of asking. Asking questions, asking for discounts, asking why, asking prices, asking for compromise or negotiation, anything! I know this seems like a simple thing, but most of us don't do it when we should!

My first "ask" tip of the day?
Ask: What is the cost?
I know it seems simple, but let's take a little test:
  • When you go to the Doctor's office, how much does it cost?
  • What does your doctor charge for "sick" office visit, and how much does he cost for a wellness check?
  • When you immunize your baby, how much does the shot cost?
  • How much does it cost if you return a book late to the library?
  • What about a DVD or audio book?
  • How much is taken away from a gift card if you don't use it within a certain time?
  • How much does an overdraft cost on your new credit or debit card?
  • How much are you paying interest on that store credit card that got you "10% off your purchase today"?
  • How much is the prescription your doctor or vet just prescribed you? How much does your vet charge to check out your animal?
  • How much does your Real Estate Agent cost once they find you a house or sell your house?
  • How much does that auto body shop charge to "check out" those squeaky brakes of yours?
See what I mean? Many times we go about our day without questioning the cost of things, or without knowing what we are really getting ourselves into.

My tip for the day? Simply ask! You should NEVER feel foolish or "cheap" by asking prices and overall costs.

Want to know a secret?
A friend of ours just graduated from dental school. Do you know that most doctors and dentists work off of commission? Guess what this makes them? Salesmen. Smart, doctor salesmen :) (P.s...there is NOTHING wrong with salesmen - my husband makes his living from being a great salesman!!)

Our friend was trained to always "recommend" the most expensive procedures to their patients. While I'm sure the procedure would benefit the patient in some way, often times there are cheaper procedures that are equally as benefitting, or the suggestion is simply preventative and not necessary in any way.

It is very important that you ask for a price list or menu of sorts in EVERYTHING we do. That way you have the power to shop around for the best price, get a second opinion to see if whatever it is is actually "necessary", and see if it works for your budget.

Knowledge is power, and in order to save money, you MUST be knowledgeable.

Give it a try!
For one month get in the habit of asking, "What is the cost?" for everything you do. It will change your life, I promise!

Good luck, and happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Misc tip

I'm not sure how this tip is money saving, but it's a GREAT tip that I love so I thought I'd share it anyway!

Today's tip:
You know those little plastic cups that you measure your laundry soap in? You know how they get nasty and goopy and gross? Well, when they get gross, simply toss them in the wash with your clothes! They won't get ruined and it washes them out while washing your clothes.

Great tip, huh??
Once again, not sure how this saves money, but oh well. Happy savings to you anyway! :)

Anyone who has ever straightened their hair knows how damaging it can be. Years ago my hairstylist friend told me to buy a Chi hair straightener. They are super expensive, but usually have an amazing warranty and last forever. I have been SO happy with mine.

I paid over $100 for it, which was a great deal because my hair stylist friend was able to buy it wholesale with her beauty license! Well, at Eziba today you can get a (super cute) Chi for just $79! This is awesome. While $79 may seem like a lot for a hair accessory, you have to think about the investment....because really, this baby will last you forever.

Saving Craving! Savings Tip of the Day: Redbox promo codes & tips

One great way to save on movie rentals is to take advantage of Redbox movies. You rent a movie for just $1 per night!

To save yourself $1, however, use a Redbox code and get your DVD free! My husband and I heard about these codes months and months ago, and have used each of them multiple times:

DVDONME
BREAKROOM
DVDATWAG

How it works: Before you start searching for movies at a kiosk, click "rent DVD with promo code". When it asks, enter one of the promo codes above. You can use each promo code one time per credit/debit card. So, if you have mulitple cards, you can use each code multiple times!

REDBOX TIPS:
  • You can return a movie to any box, regardless of where you rent it from. The boxes are everywhere!(Outside most McDonald's restaurants, outside many gas stations, and even inside grocery stores such as Wal Mart and Smith's.) On road trips my husband and I will rent a Redbox in one city, and return it in a completely differenct city once we're done watching. This cuts down on the need to keep it for more than 1 night.
  • Make sure to return your movie before 7pm or you get charged another $1.
  • You can reserve Redbox movies online so you don't have to settle for a random movie - the good ones get nabbed quick!
  • Get a free rental by creating a new redbox.com account. Click HERE
  • Don't drive far for a Redbox rental - you most likely have one around the corner. Click HERE to find ones close by to save you time and gas money.
Enjoy a good movie night for free!
Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Save on your vacation

Hello, hello everyone! I apologize for the lack of posts, I just got back from a great 10-day vacation to Sedona, AZ to spend time with my husband's family. It was great!...but it's also great to be back to "life".

Today's savings tip is fresh on my mind for obvious reasons! Vacationing can be expensive, especially if you are gone for as long as I was. However, my husband and I found ways to save a bundle on this vacation! Here's how:
  • We spent a little over $70 to completely tune up our little car. We got an oil change, topped off all of our fluids, got it washed and vacuumed it out, filled the tires, checked all the major parts, tuned and tweaked things. Our car ran great, even in Arizona's 110+ degree heat. A broken down car on vacation costs you a ton of money, time, and patience.
  • We made the LONG 10.5 hour drive in one day so we didn't have to stay over night. This takes lots of planning ahead, especially with kids! One tip that helped us: pack the car the night before, except for a small grocery sack with the items you need for that day. This allows you to simply wake up, get ready, and hop in the car.
  • We packed light so we could squeeze into our small car that gets good gas mileage. There is definitely not as much leg room or comfort as an SUV, but it saved a lot on gas money.
  • We drove on cruise control and made sure our tires were inflated properly. This makes a difference in gas mileage! Here is an article with more "good gas mileage" tips.
  • We packed our own food so we didn't have to stop for fast food or gas station snacks. (We packed pre-made sandwiches, a small cooler with cold drinks, treats like candy for when those gas station treats look really good..., cheese and crackers, apples and fruit, bagels, chips, etc.)
  • We coordinated with other family members that were going on the trip so we didn't have to bring any unnecessary items. We were able to avoid bringing big items like our stroller and booster chair by doing this. We also coordinated for meals. Each family brought drinks and snacks enough for their own family. This works well because you're not bringing excess, and each family has age-appropriate things, and things they like.
  • We called ahead and asked the resort what free amenities they can provide. They reserved a pack-n-play, high chair, and extra blankets for us which saved lots of space in our car.
  • We reserved a room with a full kitchen. Even if this costs a little extra up front, it saves more in the long run because you can avoid eating out.
  • We brought our own food to eat at the resort. We filled a cooler with our own malt-o-meal bags of cereal, a gallon of frozen milk (yes, you can freeze milk! It keeps your other food really cold on the drive, FYI. It barely thawed out in our cooler, even though the drive was so long.), snacks, drinks, lunch fixings (cheese, bread, meat, tortillas for quesadillas, etc.), and dinner meals for the week.
  • We planned ahead and made almost every meal in the resort! Each family traded off being in charge of dinner each night. My meals were: Stuffed Pasta Shells, Chimichangas, and Taco Soup/Taco Salad.
    • I made the pasta shells, chimichangas, and ground beef for the soup/salad ahead of time and froze them (shells & Chimis in 9x13 glass pans with lids, the ground beef in a ziploc bag.
    • Using the disposable foil pans saves on space for the drive home, but they don't hold up very well if you need to stack things on top of the pan in the car - FYI).
    • We packed the cooler full of ice, blue ice packs, and our frozen gallon of milk, so everything was frozen solid still once we arrived at the resort.
    • We stuck them in the freezer until it was time to cook the meals for dinner.
    • The stuffed shells and Chimichangas were ready to go, and the soup was easy - I simply packed my own cans of corn, black & kidney beans, diced tomatoes, and packets of taco seasoning. Throw them in a crock pot or pot (find out what the resort can provide) with water, and vuala! A beautiful meal.
    • I brought a frozen container of sour cream, a can of olives, a frozen block of cheese, and simply bought tomatoes and lettuce to complete the taco soup and taco salad meal. SO EASY.
    • We took advantage of free activities in the area. The concierge at the hotel typically works on commission, so they will nearly always direct you to more expensive activities. Ask the locals what hikes and activities they recommend, that are free. We did lots of hikes, sight-seeing, and swimming.
    • We asked for discounts. We asked the hotel concierge, Park Rangers, store clerks, everyone! Any place where we were about to spend money we asked if they had any "group discounts", student discounts, any "specials", or simply asked, "is there anything you can do about that price? I'm really interested but it's a little high." The worst they can say is NO, and often times they are happy to have your business and will work with you!
    • When we did eat out, we ate out for lunch. It's fun to try new, local restaurants so I'm all about eating out once in a while on vacation. Lunch-time often provides cheaper prices, often times for nearly the same portions. Call ahead to the restaurant - often times they have deals for the "twilight hour" of 2-4, since it's too late for lunch and too early for dinner. You can get great meals for great prices during this time.
    • We attended a timeshare presentation. After some negotiating over our gift, we got a $75 gift card and $80 off a Jeep tour. Yes, this took 2 hours out of our vacation. Yes, it was annoying. Yes, we had to say no about 50 times. But $75 and a Jeep our? SO WORTH IT!

    • We took our camera everywhere. Yes, our camera big and bulky, but this captures memories which helps us avoid the need to buy souvenirs!
    • We set aside A FEW hours for work. We "bought" internet for my self-employed husband for a few hours on the trip. While I think it's very important to leave your "life" behind and enjoy vacay, devoting a few hours for us helped him keep a handle on things at work and make some money while we were gone. You have to have the will power to tune work out once the internet is off, though!!
    • We found someone to watch our dog for us while we were gone. Boarding an animal is E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E. I found a family member to watch our dog for us. Yes, it's inconvenient for them, but if you buy them a nice gift or find a way to "trade" somehow, it saves a lot. If you can't think of anyone off-hand, get creative! Put a free "wanted" add on Craigs List or Facebook asking for a dog sitter. Ask around your neighborhood or church. Put a flier up at the humane society, pet shop, or local school or university advertising the need for a dog sitter.
Lastly, we ENJOYED OURSELVES! Everyone needs a mental and physical break from the daily grind. While vacation can be expensive and takes time away from work, taking a break once in a while will keep you mentally and physically healthy, prolonging a long healthy and happy life.

    Happy savings...and trails...to you!

Saving Craving! Savings tip: Free Photoshop with Gimp photo software

Have you ever wanted to do anything like THIS:

    or THIS:

    or even THIS:

You can do nearly nearly anything in Photoshop. However, Photoshop is expensive! It's at least $100. There is a FREE "photoshop" out there called GIMP.
It's absolutely free, it's safe to download, and it is so similar to Photoshop that many of the "how to" tutorials will work for either program!

Gimp, just like photoshop, is a bit complicated to use at first. I have found Youtube to be the best resource. Simply type in "Gimp tutorial" or "Gimp tutorial remove red eye" or whatever you want to learn, and there are tons of videos to show you how!

Have fun making pictures, and enjoy the savings!
    Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Video chat

I have become a huge fan of video chat. If you have never done it before, you should give it a try. My best friend just came back from a mission in Argentina (she was gone 1.5 years!) and even though we are on different US coasts, she met my baby via video chat.

There are many great uses for video chat in regards to saving money:

    • Hold a business meeting via video chat rather than traveling to their office, or taking them out to lunch
    • Video chat someone for Father's day or Mother's day, rather than buying an expensive gift. It will mean just as much, I promise.
    • Use video chat to eliminate long distance phone call costs!!
    • Use video chat to check something out before you buy it (especially something used, from the classifieds)
    • Use video chat to initially check out a house you are interested in renting or buying. This works great when you are moving to a new city. It eliminates the need for both you and your spouse to travel out to initially see a house (and if you can find a real estate agent with a laptop and willingness, you could have her tour the house for you while you watch via web cam!) and helps you narrow them down faster - saving you time and money.
    • Use video chat to check in on things: projects, your kids or pets, etc. Examples: There are web cams at many dog daycare and child daycare places now, my parents are remodeling their house and could check in while on vacation, etc. This ensures safety, accuracy, and peace of mind - saving you time and money.
    • If you have video chat on your phone, use it to preview things before they are purchased. Ex: Send your husband to the hardware store or furniture store while you stay home with the kids (or vice versa). This way you don't have to pay for a babysitter, and you can still have a say on what is purchased for your home!

All you need is a web camera (you can buy them cheap if you search online or in the classifieds, OR check your computer because it may have one built in already) and a chat program.

There are a number of programs out there that you can subscribe to or buy, but there is NO NEED to pay any money to video chat!

    My three favorite programs are:

    GMAIL chat
If you have Gmail, they have a free video chat feature.
My husband and I have had a hard time getting it to install easily sometimes. But the nice part about it is that whenever you are logged into your Gmail account, you can see instantly
    A) who else has the video chat feature downloaded and ready to use, and
    B) you can see who is online at any time, which is great for quick/impromptu video chatting.
The downside? The person you want to chat with has to have Gmail in order for it to work.

    SKYPE chat
I tried Skype for the first time this week. I was SO IMPRESSED by how easy it was! It only took about 4-5 minutes to set up. This is free, and is a great tool to talk to people all over the world.
The downside? I haven't found one yet...anyone have problems with Skype ever?

    iChat for Mac
If you have a Mac computer, ichat is great! You can share screens, chat with multiple people at once, and it's really quick and easy to use; especially since Mac's typically have a great camera built right in.
The downside? The person you want to chat with must have a mac desktop or laptop.

So, the savings tip of the day? Use video chat as creatively as possible and save, save, save!
    Happy savings to you :)

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Fixing Broken Diapers

Have you ever accidentally pulled the velcro panel off the side of a diaper? It's so frustrating to have to throw an otherwise perfectly good diaper away!

If this ever happens to you, don't throw it away! My friend Debra taught me a new trick for salvaging the "broken" diaper:
Simply double up! Put a new diaper on the outside of the broken one, and when it gets soiled, simply remove it, throw it away, and you still have the top layer (the undamaged diaper) that is in perfectly good condition.

    Thanks for the tip, Deborah!

Give it a try. Remember our mantra:
    1) Buy it cheaper
    2) Make it last longer
    3) Use it less

Saving Craving! Savings tip of the day: Reuse Baggies

If you are anything like me, you are obsessed with baggies. I "Ziploc" everything! I think it's a great way to get an airtight seal on things, keep things clean, separated, and organized, and they are great containers that shrink as the contents in the bag shrink.

Have you ever considered reusing baggies? I hadn't, until a friend introduced me to the concept. I'm now hooked. I know it seems like a total tightwad thing to do, but it not only saves money, but it cuts down on waste and helps preserve the environment!

Here are some baggie-saving tips that I use:
    • Never reuse baggies that had raw meat in them, and I typically don't reuse baggies that have anything greasy, goopy, or super sticky in them.
    • To wash, turn the bag inside out, stick each hand in a bag, and "wash your hands". You could also do one bag on one hand and use a scrubber with soap.
    • Use antibacterial dish soap and hot water, just like you would any other dish
    • Dry bags inside-out. If there is still a little water left on them when you need to use it, simply wipe clean.
    • Prop bags on utensils you are trying - handles of spatulas, big spoons, skewers, etc. You could also prop them "teepee style" on a drying rack if they are sturdy enough to stand on their own.
    • If I have used a baggie for non-food items (like my lip gloss at the airport, or my son's wet wipes) then write "not for food" on the bag and re-use (for other non-food items) it without washing it.
Here are other baggie saving tips from "The Tightwad Gazette" book:
    • If the zipper starts to split on the edges, fuse them with the tip of an iron
    • If the zipper separates completely, cut it off and use a baggie tie or rubber band to close it
    • If it has a small hole, simply use it for non-food items or foods that don't have to be airtight, like popcorn
    • You can even reuse plastic bags that random items come in - brown sugar bags, the bag your panty hose are wrapped in, produce bags, bread bag, etc.
    • Any bag with paint on it (like a bread bag) shouldn't be used inside out

So, though you may think it's crazy to reuse baggies, it only takes a few seconds and really saves the environment AND money over time! Give it a try!
    Happy savings to you :)
